A flat trail despite the hills

And hashers in Surrey now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That ran with us this sunny day

(Shouldn’t be holding it on a Sunday anyway)

Stirring words from the GM exhorting the pack to face the challenges ahead.

The hares stepped up to inform us that there would be a drink stop after 3 ½ miles and a walkers short cut from there.

The off was off punctually, following the prescribed route along the lake and across the dam to, believe it or not, the other side. A no brainer, this. Clearly it was going to be a left hander around Puttenham Common with the drink stop in the Upper Car Park and lots of nasty hills involved. On the strength of this, some of the more thinking hashers decided that some modifications to the trail might be justified and drifted off the prescribed route to minimise altitude changes.

Regrettably for them and surprising for the rest, the trail swung right, across Suffield Lane and down to Rodsall Manor. No out thinking these hares. They have a cunning plan. Keep it on the flat.

By devious meanders we arrived in Gatwick (not the aeroplane one) where potential short cuts were spurned by a hardier SH3 pack. The lure of promised refreshments further on may have had somethng to do with that. Even P F’er resisted the temptation and persisted with the next leg across the Broomfields meadow and so finally to the drink stop. Now that’s a sensible place to have a drink stop. A distance done and a distance to go. No sense in having one at the On In

The shorter route for the walkers across Lower Puttenham Common and the longer loop for the less disadvantaged. All fully refreshed, the pack surged on to their chosen trail with Chastity Belt leading the pack at the On In followed Stevie Blunder, having been lost by Spud, being guided in by an orienteering Wurzel.

MiA and Big Foot again put it together with a fine choice of territory, great weather and an almost flat run. Not only that but their device for laying flour kept everything really neat and tidy. Only goes to show what a good woman can do when in control. (I won’t say the driving seat because the back checks seemed to work while reversing is not always a strong point with the ladies)!

The RA rose to the occasion with a joke that gave rise to a laugh and so off to the Hogs Back Brewery for a jolly gathering.

And now a personal rant. If you feel that this script has been less than is warranted or shorter than normal it is because I have not been paid. Before witnesses I was promised my own bowl of chips to prepare this and all I got was a few scrapings from a common bowl. I feel justifiably hard done by. Your support will be appreciated.

  On On,

  Tosser

Recipe of the week

Bigfoot says: Chicken of the Woods mushroom, near Check 1 today. We collected it on our last recce, and stir-fried it for dinner, along with large chillis (not v spicy), chorizo and garlic. Tasty.
