A difficult day for SH3

Sunday’s hash became rather a sobering event with the loss of dear BodyShop.  As I sit here and write this on Tuesday 3rd June many of us have carried out searches which continue today.  We thank the Police, Surrey SAR and all hash members from various hashes for turning up and searching.  So far we are nowhere nearer to knowing what has happened to him, but we live in hope…

Around thirty hashers turned up for the hash including some visitors and returnees.  In between the odd spot of sun in the top car park that wind was ruddy nippy unless, like Uncle Gerry, you come equipped with extra padding.

We set off in a Northerly direction and after 300 metres or so went up a small slope inland towards Hillbury, across common land.  When we entered the next swathe of trees we skirted the East of Hillbury and continued North to Lascombe Farm.  Always with the thought that as soon as we dropped down the contours we’d pay with another climb!  Ah well, at least we were able to enjoy the scenery as we dropped down Long Bottom (reminds me of your Wife#1 Petal!).
Passing the remains of the old Fort, adjacent to Trout Pond [reminds me of your wife #3, Flash!], we headed back into the woods and down to Raffles’ favourite muddy pond, General’s Pond, more mud here than most places.  Before we reached The Tarn Pond we shortcutters headed off for the four-mile trail and left the hash masochists to endure another two miles.  Nipping back through a car park, visibly near this week’s road blockage, we went up the lane towards Puttenham before scooting in to the car park and early doughnuts / coffee.

Plaudits to Kelinchi!  Not only a Demonstration Trail from our superb hare with plenty of flour, good checks, well laid and engineered perfectly to keep the pack together but intelligently laid to make the best use of the terrain.  She keeps good company with ‘IsKnees and Chastity Belt for premier trail laying.  Not only that but she shone as an exemplary Checking Chicken.  Thank you!!

At the circle Uncle Gerry dispensed his wisdom, which was ignored, and BigFoot our RA, was reigned in after 25 minutes as we were worried the pub was reaching evening closing time.
Clearly The Good Intent has had a change of landlord and staff for the worse.  Apart from one friendly and cheery English female soul the rest of them were pretty grumpy/surly.  Entertainment was provided by Teq, who had a Pink Ticket for the whole weekend with Chundy away and not there to guide/cajole him/keep him in line; bless him he provided a humorous running commentary in the pub garden but didn’t torture us with his trumpet.  Petal nearly got into a punch up for putting his dog (That Fucking Dog) in his car with the windows closed, the bloke not realising that Raffles can, and does, know how to use the Dog Conditioning System to keep cool.

On the medical side I am pleased to report that Bigfoot’s undercarriage is still in one piece.  After four attempts by That Fucking Dog the last, near killer, blow was launched and Raffles’ jaws snapped shut a centimetre from our RA’s undercarriage, he swiftly removed himself from the hound’s nut-nibbling zone.  His dear lady said, “Wow, that was close I could be “Mee Sing” some action”.  It’s about time Olive Oyl came on more Surrey Hashes; she is used to coddling hashers goolies after a dog bite; I can certainly vouch for her gentle touch and Matronly commanding nature on such an occasion, best behind a bush of course.

Editorial – A message from the GM

Dear All,
For those not already aware, I have to tell you that sadly Bods is still missing despite the considerable resources of the Surrey Police and Search and Rescue, plus the many SH3 Hashers and others who have given up their time during this week.
As a result, having consulted Steph/BB and her son-in-law (who is coordinating the Hash search), I have come to the conclusion that our normal Sunday Run should be put on hold and the resources of SH3 should be used to aid the ongoing search process. I would add that Guildford H3 and WLH3 will also be in attendance on Sunday, the intention being to flood the search area with as many volunteer Hashers as possible. I would further add that this is with the blessing of the Police. If you are able please make the effort to attend for what I am sure you understand is an increasingly serious situation as the days tick by.
I hope to see as many of you as possible on the day.
ON ON.
Uncle Gerry.

Update (Saturday 7 June):

The search party will meet tomorrow, Sunday 8th of June, at 11 a.m. at the Puttenham Common Top Car Park Map Link. As most of the paths have been searched already this will inevitably involve searching through undergrowth, so if you can attend, dress accordingly with long trousers and bring any food and water you may need. If you have them, a whistle, a staff or trekking pole, for searching through vegetation, and a map of the area may be useful. On arrival information should be on hand as to which areas need searching or revisiting.  Lifts will be available to enable the search to target different areas.
