LE PRO ONCE MORE SURPRISES SURREY
Nobody can sum up the trails of Le Pro; each is unique, sui generis, and surprising, which has the merit of making then memorable. Today he was scheduled to lay the run with Do You? – who is still among the walking wounded – but ended up on his own. Much of the trail followed a canal towpath, yes, scenic and sunny; before that we had numerous checks with simple solutions, in zigs and zags; after that we had the sports field south of Guildford, on which our little group – Fleur d’Or, First On, CL, myself – followed the eastern boundary, without flour, where doubtless we should have been on the western edge. Certainly that is where we found Le Pro awaiting our arrival. The other surprising aspect of the trail was that we were already drinking our beer on the Green of Shalford before 12 noon, which is earlier than is customary.
There is a correction, or at least a further piece of information, to be published. My last report cast doubt on the then hare, Hornblower’s, claim to have laid a 5 mile trail, covered by the front runners in 70 minutes. The watch on the wrist of the son of Bigfoot and Missing in Action said he had covered almost 8 miles by then. Serious running! And a truly bewildering loss of energy at the checks. Or else wrist watches are unreliable at recording distances.
Today at the canal – well, canals, this area is special for the proliferation of waterways – there were plenty of people who from a distance looked like hashers, and indeed some were running (not many of us run very much these days!) but proved in the event to be just members of the public in August attire enjoying their Sunday.
Back to the beer. There is always a stand-in GM at this time of year when Bonn Bugle is in office [Ed: out of the office?]; today’s was very much a figure from the past, not seen in this role for 15 years and more now. Ex Grand Masters continue with the Surrey Hash as though given a special lease of life. Bigfoot uses a fat book to inspire him as RA, with his sinners selected piecemeal rather than as a group; today he was onto the discredited saint called Philomena, once the subject of pious legends, but now declared imaginary.
Throughout history there have always been people resentful of outsiders. It is not a political stance, and does not warrant being labelled as “Far Right”. Such people are usually not that bright, and dislike new ideas (Britain admitting to years of owning and trading slaves, climate change), but that is not political either. It is alarming that those who really are on the Far Right are reluctant to denounce the thuggery of recent rioters; Farage is not for violence, he says, but asks us to understand the motives of the brutes on the streets. He is seeking political capital from the worst behaviour seen in the UK for over a century, a modern Oswald Mosley. Writers, whether for the Press or books on politics, use words like Left and Right in all countries I can think of (I admit to complete ignorance of Chinese political discourse) but ordinary people are less fond of these words, which date back to the seats in the Assembly during the French revolution; those sitting on the left wanted further and faster change. If our hooligans ever did any thinking, which seems unlikely, they would object to change, but they would not agree to being “right-wing”.

Editorial
You won’t be cancelled or gaslit in your Runday Shag! We’re not afraid of the truth and we’ll publish almost anything or make it up. We’ll take the mickey out of your trails and your foolish antics, so have a laugh and don’t be snowflakes – that’s for the invertebrates known as the yoof of today! Eshew the Main Stream Media and read your organ of record for all that you need to know!
You were gaslit by the media over COVID and it is happening on other major issues now. When all media are saying the same thing on a matter of opinion, ask yourself, “Can it be true?” Of course the sun rises every day, but not everything is so straightforward. Thinking beings can spot a lack of rigour in reporting, but too much of the populace just laps it up blindly. Ignore it all and enjoy life in the real world. Our time here is limited, so carry on hashing!
That said, there are still little gems lurking on the inside pages…
Seen recently in an article by Michael Billington musing about he meaning of Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” which is being revived again soon, I came across the following comments, which are rather appropriate for the times in which we live and the cameraderie of hashing: “the best we can hope for, in our brief existence, is the solace of companionship” and “it captures … the human capacity for endurance in a seemingly senseless universe.“
Compare the trail here from J Arthur, which I tend to trust implicitly these days, with the version submitted by Master Bates & Bodyshop (the bottom loop only??). You can find it by clicking on the “this week’s album” link below.
