Uncle Gerry Takes a Shortcut
“Should we start the circle now? The troops are getting restless.” “Let’s just give the GM a few more minutes before we start without him…” A conversation heard several times on last Sunday’s run; but we are getting ahead of ourselves here. Let’s go back to the beginning.
A pleasant day with ‘toy story skies’ that is blue sky with a few white fluffy bits floating about and a good-sized pack assembled at the Woodman in Ashstead, for a run carefully created by Ms Bean…
The pack set off on the dot and crossed the railway for some to some really pleasant heathland, with paths meandering in and out of the considerable bushes of gorse and other flora. The pack held together well with nothing really of note until the Walkers/Runners split at about 3.5 km. The walkers soon found themselves at the edge of a large sunny open field where a wooden bench beckoned the assembly. What the runners were up to I’ve no idea.
Soon the Runners appeared from the gorse and we all set off together, and were back at the RV after about one hour.
So, getting back to the restless pack at the RV, Uncle and Mrs Gerry did finally arrive just before one o’clock. Apparently, Uncle G had taken Mrs G on a romantic stroll around some of the more scenic parts of the countryside, and they both arrived glowing with romance and happiness! So wonderful to see after 60 years…
Down Downs were awarded to Jai (Mouthful) and Jeff (no name yet, need to see to that) as guests but also as new members. With Mouthful’s husband (Slip n Slide) that means we have three new members! Whoopie! Down Down also to Vera Vomit and Multiples to Ms Bean.
Belcher took over as RA and subcontracted the joke telling to Machinist, who told a joke about a Death Row cock-up, not that such a thing could occur in real life….
And on to the pub. Ms Bean had reserved a very pleasant area for the hash to inhabit and a very convivial atmosphere ensued. Chips were great; the rest food less so, but all in all a very agreeable hash!

There is a new book out about Barbara Cartland, which reminds me of a quote by Clive James:
“Twin miracles of mascara, her eyes looked like the corpses of two small crows that had crashed into a chalk cliff .”
